Insiders Tips

Where’s the best place to rent a car?

We always rent our cars from Rugged Rentals in Salt Lake City.   They are locally owned, offer a great selection of 4 wheel drive cars, provide great service including a convenient shuttle to and from the airport and you automatically save 10% by not having to pay the airport service tax.  This is a great insider’s tip that most visitors to Deer Valley do not take advantage of.  You can find them online at and you can reach them direct at 800-977-9111.  Let them know you are staying at one of our properties and they will take extra good care of you.

Where do I go to Rent Ski Equipment?

There are many choices in renting ski equipment but after much research and much trial and error we found Skis on The Run.  Patrick and Liz are the owners there and they offer brand new top of the line ski equipment, outstanding service with highly trained technicians to help you find the best equipment for each person, fair prices and best of all they deliver and pick up directly from where you are staying.  Can find them online at or call   .  Hands down the best ski rental service in Deer Valley (covering Deer Valley, Park City and The Canyons).

Who do I call about possibly Buying Property in Deer Valley?

If you ever get the itch like we did to purchase your own property in Deer Valley in our opinion one Realtor stands out from the rest – Mark Sletton from Prudential Realty.  We have purchased two properties using Mark’s services and without a doubt he is the most knowledgeable, detail oriented, and conscientious person to have on your side. With over 29 years of real estate experience Mark Sletten will be a great resource in your quest to find and secure the perfect home for you.   You can find Mark’s firms website online at – and you can call him direct at 435-647-8080 or email him at

What about a Shuttle Service from Salt Lake City to Deer Valley?

If you decide to stay in our Arrowleaf Lodge property and plan on utilizing the free local shuttle around Park City finding a dependable Transportation Service from Salt Lake City to Park City is a must.  We recommend Premier Transportation which specializes in offering private and shared airport transportation from Salt Lake City to the Park City area including Deer Valley.

You can find them online at or call them direct at (435) 640-3144.  Ask for Chris O’Neil, the owner and they will take good care of you.

Suggestions for food shopping

There is a Whole Food Market located on Highway 224 just off the Highway 80 Park City exit.  They offer a wide arrange of organic and fresh foods that makes them a favorite stop over for our family.  Nearby is another supermarket called Smiths that offers a great selection of foods at lower prices than the two supermarkets closer to Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley.  Right off of 224 and Deer Valley Drive you will find Fresh Market and Dan’s Park City Market.  We personally prefer Dan’s as they sell Boars Head deli meat and a few other specialty items that you cannot find at Fresh Market.  Both however have an extensive selection of foods.

Other Suggested Fun Activities in Park City

Snow Tubing

Lift-served tubing is offered at Gorgoza Park, which is owned and operated by Park City Mountain Resort. Here you will find 3 lifts serving 3 beginner and 4 advanced tubing lanes. These runs are lighted for great night tubing.

There are runs appropriate for everyone ages 3 and over. Only one person is allowed per tube. Kids under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian's signature. For their safety, children 3-6 are not allowed on upper tow or lanes.

The park also offers mini-snowmobiles. And it has a warming yurt where you can rest, enjoy a snack and warm up.  Gorgoza Park is located just off I-80 as you approach Park City from the west.  For more information call Gorgoza Park, 435-658-2648.

Cross Country Skiing – the closest choice would be The White Pine Touring track, in the heart of Park City, consists of 20km of groomed tracks. The 3km loop, 5km loop and the 10km loop all located near the foothills of Park City's spectacular mountains, offer perfect conditions for the beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers.

The track is located at Park Ave and Thaynes Canyon Drive. Call 435-649-6249 for more information.

Utah Olympic Park – offers a wonderful museum, amazing bobsled rides throughout the year, and ski jumping, zip line and alpine slide in the summers.

Other Ski Mountains Nearby – In addition to Deer Valley Resort you have your choice of some of the finest ski mountains in North America including Park City Mountain Resort, The Canyons, Solitude, Alta, Snowbird, Sundance, and Powder Mountain

Two of Utah's most popular snowmobile play areas are located close to Park City. The Wasatch Mountain and Mirror Lake snowmobile complexes offer groomed trails, backcountry play areas, powder-filled bowls, steep ridges and mountain peaks.

There are a number of spas in the Park City area.  While we have not tried many our guests have raved about the Spa at Stein Eriksen located in the Silver Lake area of Deer Valley, a 3 minute walk from our Ridge town home and a 4 minute drive from our Arrowleaf Lodge unit (1 mile).  Here is more information on the Spa at Stein Eriksen:

The 20,000 sq. ft. Norwegian-style spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge has earned the Forbes Four Star Award for Hotel & Resort spas. Signature treatments include the Great Salt Stone Therapy, Nordic Princess, and Stein Gold Facial.  You can learn more online at or call them direct at 435-645-6475

Some of our Favorite Restaurants

This is a tough one as there are so many choices.

HIGH END DINING - Our top choice would be Talisker On Main.  This new restaurant is far ahead of all other local restaurants in our opinion in offering an extensive wine cellar, some of the best food in the area.  The chef is Briar Handly . You can make reservations at 435-658-5479 and check them out online at  Another favorite is Stein Eriksen’s Gliterend restaurant located at mid –mountain (a 3 minute walk from our Ridge town home).  If you enjoy German/Austrian cuisine we recommend The Goldener Hirsch (try the Weiner schnitzel).

BURGERS - For burgers we have three places we love to go to.   Royal Street Café which is located in the Silver Lake Lodge, Wasatch Brew Pub which is located on top of Main Street and Zoom located at the middle of Main Street.  At Royal Street Café it is super convenient to stop there for lunch after a fund morning of skiing.  At Wasatch Brew Pub we typically go there for dinner and our family loves their regular and buffalo burger.  If you are in the mood for something else the Pot Roast is the best I have ever had anywhere.  Zoom offers a wide selection of entrees and I usually chose the burgers as they have never disappointed.

SANDWICHES - For sandwiches the local favorite is Legers Deli which is located next to Dans Park City Market on Highway 224 or take the side entrance on Kearns Blvd.

SUNDAY BRUNCH - For Sunday brunch our absolute top choice is Stein Eriksen’s Gliterend Restaurant.  Here you will find high quality, wide assortment of delicious foods that will satisfy everyone.  If a brunch is too much for you they also offer a Skiers Lunch 6 days a week and a wonderful breakfast 6 days a week.

ON MOUNTAIN DINING - Dining on the mountain we usually go to Silver Lake Lodge or Empire Lodge as it is away from the crowds.  The selection is wide and the food is very good.  My favorite a baked potato with Deer Valley Turkey Chili or regular chili on top.  Royal Street Café is also a great choice as detailed above.

STEAKS - For steaks my favorite is Prime located on the bottom of Main Street.  They expertly prepare a wide range of steaks and the service is excellent.  My favorite is the Filet Mignon with Blue Cheese on top.

ICE CREAM - For ice cream our children’s favorite is Java Cow on Main Street.  Consistently excellent ice cream and sorbet.  This is a local favorite as well.

PIZZA - A new entry to Park City is Maxwell’s which has instantly become a local favorite.  They offer huge sized pizzas, with all fresh ingredients, thin crust and a wide selection of other Italian items.  They are located at the intersection of Highway 224 and Highway 80 near the Whole Food Market.

Insiders Travel Suggestions

Our family loves to travel and we have stayed in many special places over the years.  Below are some of our favorite places that our family has enjoyed over the years:

Via di Aquileia, Lucca Area, Tuscany ITALY

We stayed here last summer and this home offers two apartments that can be rented out with breathtaking hilltop views, spacious accommodations, a wonderful host and a fantastic location (11 km or 20 minutes from Lucca, birthplace of Puccini and less than one hour from Pisa, a wonderful historical town definitely worth visiting).  The owner speaks English and is a wonderful cook creating a number of wonderful meals for our family.  We will definitely stay here again in the near future (one of our daughters cried the last night of our stay here as she did not want to leave).  Here is there website -

Stockholm, SWEDEN

We stayed at the home of Christina’s Bed and Breakfast and enjoyed our stay immensely.  She was very helpful in offering suggestions on touring around Stockholm and other towns in Sweden.  The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated.  The morning breakfasts Christina made each morning were wonderful.  We look forward to staying here again and touring more of the wonderful islands of Sweden.  You can learn more about this special bed and breakfast on their website -

Athens, GREECE

We stayed at this lovely high end 2 bedroom/1.5 bath condo located at the foot of Lykavittos Hill in the finest area of Athens, Kolonaki.  It was beautiful, convenient, well stocked, spacious and the host and owner, Denise, was incredible.  One of our pieces of luggage did not arrive on the flight we had taken from Italy.  Denise, upon learning of our dilemma, drove to the airport without us knowing about it to do all she could to help us recover our luggage.  Our luggage arrived that evening and thanks to the efforts of our host.  We loved Athens and this neighborhood was perfect.  We would definitely stay here again.  You can reach the owner, Denise, who is a U.S born American living in Athens at 913-871-9375 (Kansas number) and view their apartment listing at

We have stayed in Rome twice.  Our first was in Giovanni’s family apartment in the heart of the historical area of Rome, located a 5 minute walk to Capital Hill and it’s museums, the Roman Forum and Coliseum.  This 3 bedroom unit was spacious, historical (building is over 700 year old), offered air conditioning and the perfect location.  We loved the little market next to the apartment and enjoyed their fresh breads and meats.  There is also a restaurant across the cobbled street as well as a coffee shop.  Giovanni picked us up at the airport for a small fee which was most convenient as you do not want to have your own rental car in Rome.  You can view this treasure of a place on the web at

Note - More places will be added soon so check back for other special places to enjoy.
